Music Theory Curriculum

Improve your reading and writing of music with this home course

I had the privilege of editing Susan’s music theory series and found it to be very thorough, accurate and easy to understand. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone interested in bettering their understanding of reading or writing music. —Jack Clark, music writer/publisher/teacher, Cleveland, TN

MUSIC THEORY BASICS: FROM RECOGNITION TO COMPOSITION starts with the basics of note and interval recognition (Section One), moves through chord writing and progressions (Section Two), and finishes with the rules of four-part choral composition (Section Three). Lessons utilize the standard hymns of the church as examples and are designed to help singers and musicians better read, perform and write their music. ($20 in the online store)

SHAPED-NOTE EAR TRAINING and SIGHT SINGING is a course based on the shaped-note system taught in the southern summer singing schools. There are also sections on sightreading standard musical notation and a musical shorthand method for writing music by dictation. The text includes links to online listening exercises. ($15 in the online store)

LYRIC WRITING FOR THE CHRISTIAN SONGWRITER includes special consideration for Christian writers with sections on preparing the writer and presenting the message, as well as more common guidance regarding form, rhythm, rhyme, and analysis of lyrics. ($15 in the online store)

The content is widely inspired by the curriculum offered at Ben Speer’s Stamps-Baxter School of Music
